I rented a car in Florence and drove to Volterra and stayed the night before continuing on up to Pisa by the back roads. This thing was in a field on the way up the hill that Volterra sits on top of. There are locals hitchhiking everywhere. I picked up many of them, it's the thing to do as many country folks don't have a car.
