Not sure at this point; I've only been down to this part of town once. My guess is that they're a quick way to keep the vans parked in particluar spaces, but that's pure speculation.
Hopefully I'll have a chance to grab some photos in the next few weeks.
Actually, farther south the protest is visible in the north and south imagery as well, although near the White House the protest is only visible in the north and south imagery and not in the west imagery.
I don't beleieve that they were trying to censor anything, but rather imagine that this is a color or contrast adjustment gone bad. Notice how all the eraser marks stop at dark spots... I imagine there was some sort of reflection or out of gamut area related to these bright white roofs that was being corrected.
If you click the "Show Labels" checkbox you can see the image without the gray overlay that the MS map layer superimposes, and the transparent area becomes much less...
It's actually far more attractive from ground-level. I'll try to submit some pics.

I e-mailed the Historical Society of Talbot County (HSTC) about this a while back. My inquiry:
I was hoping that someone at HSTC could either give me some information or point me to a reference where I could find out some information about an area of Talbot County listed as Thanksgiving on USGS topographic maps. The area is between Newcomb and Maxmore creeks, near the eastern intersection of MD 33 and MD 329. Specifically, I was curious as to the source of the name...

# Back in the 19th century, the thermal waters of Escaldes aroused the interest of many foreign companies, which announced their intention to set up a thermal and recreational centre aimed at an élite tourism, but it was only in the 1990s that at last the spa fun centre was opened.

Point taken; I imagine the author of this snippet was using the term "Baltics" to refer to Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, and not to the Baltic as a whole.

Mostly I just wanted to make sure that your intention as a submitter was reflected in the final submission, not knowing which mine you had intended to submit.
There is a discrepancy between the coordinates of this submission and the image on the thumbnail (which has now been fixed).

Since this section did not connect to any road, it remained useless for years after it was completed...
An interesting posting by Stefan Geens on Monday at his Ogle Earth blog concerning an article in Le Figaro which points out the fact that not only the rooftop but the rose garden, swimming pool, and other features of the white house grounds are/were covered up as well:
which is a valid URL for Google Maps, but when it gets converted into KML to link into Google Earth, it winds up pointing to somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean.
Arecibo Observatory has provided a unique setting for Hollywood filmmakers. Yeah, I was just pulling your leg; it's been a while since anyone other than me has submitted a DC post.
I figure DC will cap out at about 750 entries, or what works out to be 12 map submissions per square mile... that leaves quite a bit left for both of us...
Actually, they're saying now it might cost Dc up to $700 Million... and the DC Council and the Mayor have been going at it with each other and with MLB for months...
This is a pretty early submission... since then Google has changed the image representing this area.
It also looks like either Google changed the overlay correspondence that caused some maps to appear streched, or that the submitter squeezed the map in the vertical direction to get the stadium to fit into the 150 by 150 box.
