http://www.starshipdiaries.com/status.html has information on why the Starships were put out to pasture. It cost Raytheon too much to support them, and they were probably going to last a lot longer than an aluminum hull. There were only 53 made and 31 of them are sitting at this map location.

I used to live under an airport approach path and they made a very distinctive sound as the passed overhead - fun to watch.
The name spans 2.5 miles. Each letter is 3,100 high and 1,700 feet wide. The dark part of each letter is 500 feet thick. The effect was made not by new plantings but by cleaning the brush and trees between the letters.
