There's 2 of these - this and an aerial view of the same thing. Incidentally, look round on this one and you'll see it doesn't work - judging by all the damage to the building behind it !

As I've said, it'll likely be no quicker than waiting for the train to pass and then crossing at road level. There doesn't appear to be any reason for a train to stop there either.

The 'Outer Barrier' which now contains the 'lagoon' is in fact the third such barrier. Near the middle of the lagoon can be seen an earlier barrier which collapsed shortly after completion due to the mining activity beneath. The first barrier was simply wooden and was constructed just inland of the second barrier and approximately following the natural coastline. These barriers were built to protect the iron ore 'hematite' mines at Hodbarrow. Many shafts were sunk to access the exceptional...

I'm not sure what 'closed' means but the airfield is still in regular use! The owners use it for their own private flights and it has been the base for the Lakes Gliding Club (http://www.lakesgc.co.uk/) for decades.
