Description:Though it is less than seven miles long, the Cape Cod Canal is the widest sea-level canal in the world. Construction started in 1909, and finished in 1914, and its width was almost doubled in the 1920's. It transformed Cape Cod from a peninsula to an island, and cut off a significant amount of travel time for coastal shipping, which had formerly to travel the dangerous waters around the Cape. The canal is spanned only by the Bourne and Sagamore bridges, and the railroad lift bridge near Buzzards Bay, which is the second largest railroad lift bridge in the world.
