Historical Village of Hokkaido, an open-air museum, was opened in April, 1983 with the purpose of providing a physical setting for understanding the colonial days and to preserve historic building for the coming generations. The 54 hectare-village on the outskirts of the Hokkaido Prefectural Park "Nopporo Forest Park" embraces buildings from the Meiji and Taisho Periods; the structures have been dismantled and reassembled in the park.  The Village is divided into four areas representing a town, a farming community, a fishing village, and a mountain community. The building of the about 60 asks us to the reclamation age. Houses and other structures on the respective sites are equipped with household items, tools, and so on, to represent the productive activities and the way of life of the time. A horse-drawn trolley in summer and sleighs in winter provide transportation in the park and are authentic mobile displays.  Visitors can take part in a variety of a activities at the Village such as seasonal festivals and other yearly events,the tradition technology and the folk entertainment, working on the farm, making folk toys and crafts with straw, and so on.
