Released in December 1999, the Honda Insight was the first hybrid officially sold in the United States. The Prius would then follow in 2000 after being a Japan-exclusive model that was privately imported into certain countries including the U.S. For this generation, the Insight was a 2-door, 2-seater subcompact hatchback with a three-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. CVT transmissions arrived for 2001 as an option over the standard 5-speed manual.
