The Stars Motel sign

The Stars Motel sign (StreetView)
This vintage neon sign is all that remains of The Stars Motel. The motel was built in 1956 and was demolished in 2006. It was one of 14 motels along this stretch of Lincoln Avenue (US 41), which was once a main highway in and out of Chicago. The sign advertises the motel's air conditioning, switchboard, and free television.

The motel was torn down in order for a condo project to be built. The sign was placed on eBay, but the winning bidder did not come forward to take the sign. The economy tanked, and the condo project never broke ground. Today, the vacant lot is used as a community garden, but the vintage sign still stands.
