In 1956, the second year of the Ford Thunderbird's production, the spare tire that came available with it was now mounted on the outside to save up trunk space. It was also the first year in which a 312 cubic inch (5.1 liter) V8 was available alongside the standard 292 cubic inch (4.8 liter) engine. However, it is the rarest of the three two-seater Thunderbird model years at 15,631 units built.
