This region was a rubber producing area in the late 19th Century.
Up to 30,000 people are currently involved in small scale gold mining.
Along the Madre de Dios River and especially inside the old river oxbows have thousands of piles of processed gravels in a series of excavated pits. Mercury is frequently used in these operations.
