S.A. are was operated commercially as a Car Carrier until 1993 when she was bought by the US Department of Transportation, Maritime Administration. It was subsequently transferred to the Maritime Administrations Ready reserve fleet and assigned to Maryland. She now has ROS-5 status.

As a W-class roll-on/roll-off vessel Cape Washington brought vehicles and supplies to Europe for air-lift to troops during operations in Iran and Afgahnistan. She is manned by a civilian crew.
