Edmund Pettus Bridge crosses over the Alabama River. In 1965, the bridge was the site of a peaceful civil rights march. The demonstraters were met with violence from state troopers who attacked those marching with nightsticks and tear gas. The event is referred to as "Bloody Sunday".
