Girl in a Hat – Bernard Sindall

Girl in a Hat – Bernard Sindall

Birmingham, United Kingdom (GB)
This large bronze sculpture by Barbara Hepworth shows a girl standing casually wearing nothing save a hat. The sculpture was gifted to the University of Birmingham by Sir Robert and Lady Aitken, on Sir Robert’s retirement as Vice-Chancellor in 1988. It is positioned in the northwest corner of the Chancellor’s Court in front of the Law Faculty building.

The sculpture is in the tradition of Donatello’s ‘David’ and has a similar classical pose it also draws on Degas’ ‘The Little Dancer Aged Fourteen’.

Barbara Hepworth also produced the sculptures ‘Girl in a Hat’ (Seated nude wearing a hat) and ‘Girl with necklace’ (Standing nude) which share many of the elements of the ‘Girl in a Hat’ sculpture.
