John Witherspoon's paternal grave in Gifford

John Witherspoon (1723-1794) was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States and signer of the Declaration of Independence. He was born in Gifford, Scotland, February 5, 1723 and in 1768 he and his wife and children moved to New Jersey. he became the 6. President of today's Princeton University.

He was a member of the US Congress from 1777-1784.

His parents are buried in this grave at Yester Kirk in Gifford.
