Lynn Woods has been deliberately set aside for common use as far back as colonial times. Once used for timber and fuel, it is today the largest municipal park in Massachusetts and the second largest in the U.S.

Legend has it that the pirate Thomas Veal was entombed alive in Dungeon Rock during an earthquake, where his remains and treasure still lie.
