On Friday 5th April 2024 at 12:29 UTC, Luc ON2LVC. a radio amateur from Belgium made contact with Peter F/DK3RN/P, a radio amateur from Germany who was operating from Natura 2000 - Massif vosgien (FFF-1581), on the 40m amateur radio band.
Natura 2000 - Massif vosgien (FFF-1581)[Vosges Massif], is a protected area which covers 26,387 hectares in the Vosges Department of the Grand-Est Region of France. It is a Type A Des Zones de Protection Spéciales (ZPS)[Special Protection Areas (SPAs)]
Natura 2000 aims to protect many of Europe's most vulnerable and threatened habitats and species. ZPS areas aim to conserve the wild bird species listed in Annex I of the EU “Birds Directive or to protect an area where migratory birds breed, moult or lay-over.
Peter was at the summit of Le Rainkopf (1305 metres asl) while he was at the reserve and made a total of 16 contacts for the Summits on the Air (“SOTA”) group.
