During World War II, a total of 411,429 Naval recruits were trained here in its three and one-half years of operation. The base stretched 4.5 miles along the eastern shore of Lake Seneca. Around 1950 the land was transferred to the Air Force for basic training.

My dad did his naval training for WWII at Sampson.
