Staffordshire University received its Charter on 16th June 1932 having first been established in 1914 as a polytechnic.

The polytechnic and now the university have close ties with the ceramics industry in Stoke-on-Trent, but the university is also looking to the future to create new opportunities not only in ceramics but in other industries and fields for example its Health Education Centres of Excellence in Stafford and Shrewsbury, and computing and sports education at Stafford and Madeley respectively.
