Stepantsminda is 124km (153 miles) from Tbilisk at an altitude of 1,797 metres in the northeast of Georgia. It is the only town in the province of Khevi (Mokhava), however its population is only c2,000 (June 2018).
The area around the town is mainly used for extensive farming of highland cattle and pigs.
The English translation of Stepan-Tsminda is St. Stephen who was the eldest of the deacons appointed by the Apostles to distribute charity to the poor of the early church community. The name of the town was change in 1925 to Kazbegi after Alexander Kazbegi, a pastoral poet and local nobleman. However, it has now reverted to its earlier name although is still common for Kazbegi to be used. The main square in the town contains a fine monument to Alexander Kazbegi.
