The Woodland Trust - Smithills Estate

The Smithills Estate is an area of moorland , grassland and farmland with many wooded cloughs and peat bogs on the slopes of Winter Hill north of Bolton in Greater Manchester.

The estate is the largest site in England which has so far been purchased the conservation charity the Woodland trust who are working to restore and
revitalise the area.

The trust iplans to create a variety of habitats that will encourage wildlife to thrive inckuding skylarks, common lizards and brown hares.

The estate also has some interesting flora such as towering trees, beautiful wildflowers and many species of fungi.
