1873 – The Colfax massacre or Colfax Riot occurred on Easter Sunday, in Colfax, Louisiana, the seat of Grant Parish, when 50 men were killed in a battle over a disputed election for governor.

1895 – The State Russian Museum (formerly the Russian Museum of His Imperial Majesty Alexander III, while prior to that, as the Palace of the Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna) is established ast the largest depository of the Russian fine art in St Petersburg.
