Ounianga was the first French post built after the conquest of Chad.

The fortified position overlooking Lake Yoa, Fort Lagrion was erected in 1936 and the defense system was built in anticipation of the Libyan war. It is occupied by the 8th Company of the 1st Battalion of the Chad Army.
