Alleged location of the Confederate (1862) Mars Bluff Naval Shipyard located on the Great Pee Dee River, near Florence. The "CSS Pee Dee, a Confederate naval vessel, was constructed at the Pee Dee Navy Yard located in Marion County, immediately above the United States Highway 76 bridge, between 1862 and 1864." The CSS Pee Dee was found and artifact have been retrieved. Link is to a bill to save the find for South Carolina.

The Confederacy established a navy yard 1/4 mile NW about 1853 on the banks of the Great Pee Dee River. Here, under the command of Lt. Van Renssalaer Morgan, a wooden gunboat, the C.S.S. Pee Dee, was built. Launched by November 1864, it was burned to prevent its capture by Federal Forces in March 1865. Erected by the U.D.C.
