Allen, a census-designated place located in Bennett County in southwestern South Dakota, was named for the first merchant of the town, Charles W. Allen. With a per capita income of a meager $1,539, it is considered the poorest place in the United States; at least 96% of the town's 420 residents are below the poverty line. It is also one of the most remote places in the United States, in which its continental pole of inaccessibility, lying in the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, lies between Allen and the nearby town of Kyle, and the nearest coastline is located 1,024 miles away.

Native Americans dominate the population there according to the 2010 census, and the CDP's ZIP code is 57714.
