The Caldon Canal was built as a branch of the Trent and Mersey Canal and opened in 1779. From its junction with the Trent and Mersey Canal at Etruria, Stoke-on-Trent, it runs for 18 miles (29 km) to Froghall in Staffordshire. The canal has a single tunnel) (Froghall Tunnel) and 17 locks.
