On August 16, 1896 the first piece of gold was found on a Klondike River tributary called Rabbit Creek (Bonanza Creek today). The gold was found by George Carmack, his wife Kate, her brother Skookum Jim, and their nephew Dawson Charlie. Their discovery kicked off the Klondike Gold Rush.

Discovery claim at Bonanza Creek was designated a National Historic Site of Canada on July 13, 1998.
