The Hampton House is a former lodging facility that served black patrons during segregation in the American South. The location was known as a Green Book site which was included in a directory which "was intended to provide African American travelers with lodging, dining, and other pertinent information necessary to remain safe and comfortable during their trips."
The original site was called The Booker Terrace Motel and opened in 1954. By 1961 the motel had been sold to Harry and Florence Markowitz, who remodeled and renamed it the Hampton House Motel. During the 1960's the motel hosted prominent celebrities including Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Sammy Davis Jr., Sam Cooke, Nat King Cole, Jackie Robinson, and Joe Louis.
The Motel closed in 1976 and later threatened with demolition in the early 2000's. The site was eventually purchased by Miami-Dade County who spent $6 million restoring and turning it into a museum.
The motel was the fictional meeting place for Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke, and Jim Brown in the 2020 movie, One Night in Miami...
In 2023 the motel was declared a National Historic Landmark.
