A small rough brick mosque with a single minaret on the outskirts of Murghob the capital of the Murghob District in the autonomous region of Gorno-Badaskshan in the Pamir Mountains.
In Persian ‘murghob’ means prairie river, it was former known as Pamirski Post when the town was not a permanent settlement.
Murghob is the highest town in Tajikistan at 3,618 (11,871 feet) above sea level and is situated at the junction of the Pamir Highway and the Murghab.
The town once had a Russian garrison and was at the very edge of Imperial Russia’s military advance into central Asia. The Russian garrison closed in 2002 at the time that Tajikistan gained its independence.
