The Kyoto Old Imperial Palace is the place where the Emperor used to live until he moved to Edo in 1869. Around 800, about the same period of the Tale of Heike, battling factions tried to marry into the Imperial family to gain wealth and power. The Tale of Heike expresses the sorrows around the conflicts.

Kyoto. The Kyoto Imperial palace was the setting of many historical tales, not only the Tale of Heike. Kyoto became the capital of Japan in 794 and was named Heian-kyo, which means the capital of peace and tranquility, praised for its harmony. Although Kyoto was involved in many civil wars, each time the city was reborn from disaster.
