Plymouth was the capital of Montserrat, an overseas territory of the United Kingdom.

After a volcanic eruption on 18 July 1995 by the Soufrière Hills volcano, the city was devastated and abandoned, causing more than two-thirds of the population to flee to neighboring islands. Government buildings are now located at Brades though Plymouth remains the de jure capital since no new capital has been formally created
