This tramcar is the last remaining example of Sheffield’s ‘improved standard’ tramcars which were also known as ‘domed roof’ cars.
When built in 1937 it was one of a batch of 67 double deck fully enclosed four-wheel improved standard class electric tramcars. These tramcars had a total seating capacity of 61 split 37 upper saloon and 24 lower saloon.
The truck is a Peckham P22 with MV 103DR 2 x 60 hp motors and a BTH B51O Controller on which was fitted bodywork built by Sheffield Corporation Transport engineering department.
No. 264 as with most of Sheffield’s fleet had a trolley current collector rather than a pantograph. It was withdrawn from service in the Yorkshire town on 8 October 1960.
Here on Street View No.264 is seen in the main Exhibition Hall at Crich Tramway Village in Derbyshire which is the home of the National Tramway Museum.
