I thought it was interesting enough to seek it out on a trip to Paris after reading the Metropole article (Metropole, while spotty over the years, is a pretty cool little on-line magazine.) I'll see if I have pics and post them.
Thanks. I've noticed worldstadiums is often wrong when it comes to identifying international stadiums too, sometimes assigning incorrect names or including incorrect images. Especially in France for some reason.
Probably a mix of both. If there are a bunch in one place then probably abandoned or waiting to be scrapped. Alone more like you say; a shipwreck or something similar. But I'm no expert.
Someone over in the GE forums has the definitive collection of the world's shipwrecks. Lots more details on some sites. He could probably shed more light on the subject.
A lot of older ships cost more to salvage in the US than they are worth because of the cost of handling the hazardous wastes onboard (lead paint, asbestos, PCBs, etc.) Many of these ships are sold for next to nothing to third world countries ostensibly to be scrapped but with the implicit understanding that the'll be dumped off in one of these graveyards. I imagine one day the price point of processing these vs cost of the raw materials in them will cross some threshold and all of a sudden...
"The aircraft lost directional control and ran off the side of runway 23L. The right hand main gear leg collapsed, causing additional damage to the nr.3 and 4 engines."
Still there as far as I can tell. I just tried it. the first time it failed. I went out to the west and slipped in facing East and it went OK. Then I tried the original link again and it worked.
LL has been flakey today. This morning Pacific Time it was down completely. Maybe they are making some changes.
In this particular case though I added 'ancient' and 'amphitheatre' when I submitted the map and the automatic category algorithm added 'theater - misc'. When this map gets moderated (It hasn't at the time we wrote these comments) I would normally delete the 'theater - misc' since the 'theatre - amphitheatre' is more specific.
When we moderate we can add more categories or remove categories. If there are more categories that you ever want added just put it in a comment for your map and we can add it. Two seems to be the average so that's what nic put on the submission page.
Sorry, I didn't mean the old one. I see what you mean now. The new imagery is worse than the old. I agree. A couple of places, especially islands are completely gone.
I agree with jbottero. First if you look closely at the car tracks around the rim it isn't like a track. Second if you google for pictures of kite surfing here you find them all out in the dusty lake bed, not on a track. In fact i think there are a couple up to the NNW if you look closely.
Sorry. We don't have any control over the submit tmes. They go into the database based on when they were submitted and it isn't a field that moderators have access to.
I assume it was a keyboard entry by some data entry person entering a clients request. Oops, left off a minus sign and you got... water instead of a missile silo.
If you back off a ways youll see this is the edge of an image that they've patchworked over the area. It is just an artifact of the images that were merged.
I thought that too at first but look in the SW corner. There are road ruts that parallel the very edge and then around the end of some of the lines. Other lines have ruts like someone drove off the end of the line and looped around to go back up it.
Staging area for the painting with ruts radiating out into the pattern here?

I walked in to these today and they are gone. (At least the three to the east; I couldn't get to the one to the west.) There are a few foundation blocks with rusted steel on top but nothing else. (6/10/2006)
I think the new submission today (6/9) is actually the correct location. Towards the end there is a very clear shot of the surrounding roads including the clearing with two trees and large buildings just to the NW at the slight turn in the road.
I think that is the intersection of multiple images. These maps are a patchwork of many many images. This happens to be a place where the seam is more noticable.

Lots of BEV links seem to be broken right now.

Sometimes a sub category gets used as an adjective / modifier. We are fairly loose with the categories so don't expect perfect fits all the time.
