Ancient City of Heraclea Lyncestis

Heraclea Lyncestis was an ancient Greek city located in modern-day Macedonia (FYROM). The city was taken over by the Romans when they conquered the area in the 2nd century BC. Emperor Hadrian built a theatre in the city, which is still there today, while the other buildings were being restored or rebuilt. The Romans stopped using the theatre in the 4th century AD when gladiator fights were banned due to the spread of Christianity.

Today, the theatre, walls and foundations of other buildings, mosaics and columns remain at the site.
