Ptolemias is an ancient Roman city located in modern-day Libya. The ruins of the city lie near the small village of Tolmeita. The city was founded and named after one of the kings of Ptolemaic Egypt - speculated to be Ptolemy III Euergetes. The location was originally a small Greek settlement with an unknown name established sometime in the late 7th century BC. Under Roman rule, the city became the capital of the region of Cyrenaica.
Many of the ruined buildings are still visible today.
