Sabratha was established in 500 BC as a Phoenician trading-post. The area was Romanized and rebuilt around 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. Emperor Septimius Severus was born in nearby Leptis Magna. The city was damaged by earthquakes during the 4th century - most notably the quake of 365 AD.
The area is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
