Sidney Smith created the comic strip "The Gumps", which was printed in newspapers from 1917-59. Within a few years, the comic became very popular and spawned dozens of short films and a line of merchandise.

The Chicago Tribune gifted Smith with a statue of the comic strip's main character, Andy Gump. After Smith died in a car accident in 1935, the statue was moved from Smith's home to a city park in his hometown. The statue was destroyed in a 1967 riot, but a replacement statue was created.
