Campo Imperatore is a mountain grassland or alpine meadow formed by a high basin shaped plateau located in the Province of L'Aquila in the Abruzzo region of Italy in the Gran Sasso massif. It is the largest plateau of the Apennine ridge. Known as Italy's "Little Tibet"; It is located in the natural park known as the "Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park"

A 2130 m lies the historic Hotel of Campo Imperatore, where in 1943, Benito Mussolini was held prisoner until his release from 12 September 1943 by the German troops led by SS Captain Otto Skorzeny (Operation Oak).
