Indiana's First State Capitol building was constructed of limestone from a nearby quarry. Construction began in 1811 and was completed in 1813. The building was constructed by Dennis Pennington, the states first speaker of the Indiana Senate and the speaker of the territorial legislature, who was awarded the construction contract by the Indiana Territorial Legislature.
