On July 1, 2012, MAFFS #7, which belonged to the North Carolina Air National Guard's 145th Airlift Wing based at the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, crashed near the town of Edgemont, South Dakota, while fighting the White Draw Fire about five miles northeast of Edgemont in the southwest corner of South Dakota. Of the six crew aboard the C-130 Hercules, Lt. Col. Paul K. Mikeal, Maj. Joseph M. McCormick, Maj. Ryan S. David and Senior Master Sgt. Robert S. Cannon lost their lives.
