Rocket Richard statue

Rocket Richard statue (StreetView)
In 2001, national hero and hockey legend Maurice "Rocket" Richard was posthumously honored by the Canadian government with this statue.

He was one of the sports first superstars, as he racked up 544 goals and 965 points in 978 games played. His entire career from 1942-1960 was spent with the Montreal Canadiens.

Richard broke down a social barrier between those who spoke English and French-speaking people of Quebec. He didn't speak English early in his career and was discriminated against by players, officials, press, and the league. As his incredible career progressed, he won the respect of everyone in the sport and opened the gates for talented French-Canadiens to play in the NHL.
