Historic bar in Key West, FL. It was founded in 1933 and named after a bar in old Havana. Famous patrons included Ernest Hemingway and rum runner Habana Joe. The term "sloppy" came from the Cuban patrons taunting owner Jose (Joe) Garcia Rio calling the bar sloppy due to the Cuban heat melting the ice.
In 2006 the bar was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Sloppy Joe's conducts a Ernest Hemingway look-alike contest, which started in 1981.
