Jerry, have you tried contacting someone at elibridge.com? The historic marker mentions that it traveled to fairgrounds across North America, but I suppose it may have had a regular annual visit to West Allis. Feel free to provide a follow up comment here if you learn more about its history.
I stumbled across this display during a visit to Jacksonville in 2014.
Surprised it is not currently mentioned in his wiki article... He has been a color analyst for IndyCar races on NBC Sports Network since 2014. I never cared for him much as a driver, but I enjoy his willingness not to sugarcoat a story on the broadcasts. The combination of Tracy and Townsend Bell as expert color analysts on the broadcast team works very well, in my opinion.
From looking at the latest street view photos, the 419.99 sign was placed, I'm guessing, 20 feet further down the road (using the stake on the left shoulder as a reference point). No way that it was moved 53 feet (the common length of a semi-trailer).
As a mail man, this kind of thing irks me. Two houses one block apart with the same house number. Piss poor job by a municipal worker when assigning addresses when the neighborhood was created. It was a huge issue on my previous route.
I live in the far northern Chicago suburb of Kenosha, WI. Two players from my hometown were taken in the first round of this draft - Trae Waynes (11th pick by Minnesota) and Melvin Gordon (15th pick by San Diego). I watched them play several times as teammates at Bradford High School.
With a new promoter running the program, the speedway reopened for the 2015 season. I stopped here for a quick look in May, and I found that the dirt track was no longer there.
Thanks for the correction. According the their web site, the museum also features a 1952 T-33A on the grounds. I misidentified it when I posted this back in 2007.
I stopped here for a quick look at the property in September 2012, and it was not in good shape. Good luck to the Hammers to bring this place back to life.
Bing has since taken this censorship one step further by stitching part of the satellite photo view into the north birds eye photo. There was nothing out of the ordinary in this scene apart from the small pixelated item.
Wikipedia:
As of October 2010, 244,237 German households have opted out Street View. Google complied by blurring the façades on the corresponding Street View images.
All of these former Pabst buildings are slowly being renovated into mixed residential and commercial space. I'm not sure there's much left inside the shells of these buildings recognizable from the brewery days.
I kept seeing billboards for a "Indy Scream Park" haunted house in Street View. Looked it up and found that it is held at this very impressive paintball business. Each of their paintball fields has a different theme with some pretty cool structures.
The track closed suddenly in July 2014 after the promoter got frustrated with uncooperative racers. Time will tell if another party steps up to reopen the track.
Oh, there are many more cars on poles out there that we can post. I rounded up what I could find on the site into a collection. I'm sure there are some that I am missing. I'll add that Mazda if its still visible in Street View.
The glass that shattered was an 1/8 inch thick coating that keeps the 3.5 inch thick glass floor from getting scuffed. No one was in danger of falling when it shattered, but I'm sure it was frightening!
This was an A.J. Foyt team car. I cannot find an image online of this exact car in action, but Billy Boat drove one with similar livery in the late 90's.
I'd rather be at a crummy Arizona drag strip in February than to be suffering through a cycle of polar vortices and snow storms. The beauty of an NHRA event is having the freedom to roam the pit area throughout the entire event, so you do not have to be stuck sitting next to oversized fans for the whole day.
While on vacation, I drove by this location last weekend. The main building along the road struck me as very eerie - straight out of a horror movie. I wasn't aware of the fire until seeing it today on Bing Maps.
The 4014 was reacquired by Union Pacific and is currently on its way to Wyoming for a restoration project that will return it to operational status. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Pacific_4014
On the gifts table in the banquet hall, a hard-to-read sign with their names written in fancy-schmanzy cursive writing matched the names I found on a google search for September 2013 weddings at that park.

I'm guessing the other set which was built northeast of here was the site of the battle scene in the episode "Blackwater", where Lannister's men defend the city against an attack from the sea. Season 2, Episode 9.
The bullseye and the two small buildings appear in Google Earth's 1993 satellite photo. The storage tank is shown being built in 2003. Also, the bullseye is casting a very, very small shadow in a few historical photos (compared to the storage tank and buildings), so it is not elevated off the ground by much.
Many oval tracks in that era and earlier were fairly flat. It was common for races to be held on former horse tracks found at many fairgrounds. Eventually, race cars became faster and NASCAR's banked speedways built in the 50's and 60's became popular, thus banked corners on short tracks became more common. This one reminds me of a small version of Indianapolis. Four right angle turns with short straights.
I'm surprised that this place is still somewhat recognizable after...
Above the thumbnail is the message, "This map has better detail in Google Earth than Google Maps". The mods add this message on Google Earth only maps.
This was also the site of a recent concert which made the news. A private jet carrying the rock bands Ratt and Dokken had to make an emergency landing in Moline, Illinois. The bands rode in SUV's across the state to make it in time. Also performing were Lita Ford, Sebastian Bach, Warrant, and Kip Winger.
I've tried to find the history of this arch, but there is next to nothing about it online. A discussion forum I found only confirms that it has been there for decades.
On a trip to Kansas last week, I came across an impressive horseshoe club's site. After spending a few days in flyover country, I can believe how something like horseshoes is a serious activity there. The NHPA has a big world tournament at a different city each year.
This property suffered much damage from a May 20, 2013, tornado that devastated the region. After a great deal of effort rebuilding the damaged fixtures, the track reopened in August. The record breaking crowd gave the track owners a standing ovation.
Not a crossing warning, but rather a "be aware" sign. The road ahead is curvy with many trees, creating a few dangerous areas to approach a horse drawn buggy. I have had a few close calls on Pennsylvania roads.

Local race fans and historians fought the mayor's plan to redevelop the land and won.

The new track is finally under construction and is expected to open in May 2014. The 1/4 mile clay oval will be named I-40 Raceway.
