Borrowdale Temperate Rainforest

Borrowdale Temperate Rainforest (StreetView)
On Wednesday 23rd May 2024, The Guardian Newspaper in the UK, reported the Borrowdale Temperate Rainforest in the English Lake District had been declared a National Nature Reserve ("NNR").

The NNR covers an area of 721.18 hectares near Keswick in Cumbria, owned by the National Trust. The NNR contains several native woodlands in the valley and will conserve and protect this rare ancient natural habitat, where boulders and trees drip with lush vegetation, rich in lichens, ferns and mosses.

The valley regularly sees the highest rainfall in England and is as wet as a tropical rainforest, but obviously is much cooler. The heavy precipitation has given rise to the Atlantic oakwood and Celtic woodland which was once common across western Europe.
