Coryton is situated 30 miles from London, along the Thames Estuary, well located for deep water, road and rail facilities. For many years prior to the refinery first starting in 1953, the site was an oil storage depot.

In June 2006, BP said it has decided to sell its Coryton Refinery in Essex and is holding talks with several potential buyers.

Coryton processes 172,000 barrels of crude oil a day.
