Herring Gull ( Larus argentatus)

Herring Gull ( Larus argentatus) (StreetView)
The Herring Gull is one of the larger gulls and is found not only around the coast but also inland where there are scavenging opportunities.

Adult Herring Gulls have white heads and underparts with light grey backs and wings. The wing tips are black with white spots which are known as mirrors.

The Herring Gull although common in the Isle of Man is a red-listed species and numbers have declined significantly in recent years.

The Herring Gull is an opportunistic scavenger and is quick to learn where to find food in both the natural and man-made environment. It is for this reason that carelessly discarded food close to refuse bins and fast-food outlets will attract Herring Gulls.
