On Friday 22nd September 2023 BBC Isle of Man and other news outlets reported that Pope Francis had granted the Catholic church in Douglas, Isle of Man cathedral status.
The honour follows the granting of city status to Douglas in 2022 as part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations for the previous Lord of Man, the late Queen Elizabeth II.
St. Mary of the Isle will be a co-cathedral with Christ the King, Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, the first co-cathedrals in the British Isles.
