On the 5th of August 1962 Mandela was arrested at this point on the R103 road and was imprisoned in the Johannesburg Fort. He had been on the run from the Security Police for seventeen months. The monument was erected at the spot where he said goodbye to freedom for 27 years.

On the plaque it reads:
"Tsiamelo - This monument was erected by the people of Howick to commemorate the site of arrest of President Nelson R. Mandela on 5 August 1962. The plaque was unveiled by the President of the republic of South Africa on occasion of receiving honorary citizenship on 12 December 1996"
