This bronze and stone fountain featuring a mermaid is the focal point of Mermaid Square at the University of Birmingham Guild of Students building and was created by the sculptor William James Boyle.

The mermaid rides stylised bronze waves which are on top of a layered bow which is shaped like scallop shell with lily flowers.

The mermaid features on the university’s crest and was taken from the ‘unofficial’ coat of arms of Josiah Mason who founded Mason College the precursor of the University.
