Made in 1988 in the last full year of the Ceausescu era, it was meant to be a monument to those who built the Danube-Black Sea Canal.
According to some interpretations, it is depicting a fallen angel.
Without the plinth, the statue is 38 meters tall, with the plinth it is 50 meters high.
