Plaque honoring Le Vaillant the pigeon

Plaque honoring Le Vaillant the pigeon (StreetView)
Le Vaillant was one of four pigeons tasked by the French Army at Fort Vaux in World War I to carry messages. On June 4, 1916, the bird was mortally wounded while carrying a message requesting reinforcements during the Battle of Verdun. Le Vaillant delivered the message to the citadel and died in the hands of the citadel's pigeon master. Le Vaillant was awarded the Legion of Honour and is commemorated by a plaque at the fort.
